PTSD Therapy Materials

PTSD Therapy Materials

1. Information sheets for patients, family and friends

Information sheet on PTSD symptoms for patients

Normalising PTSD symptoms is part of the assessment and first treatment session in CT-PTSD. This handout summarises common PTSD symptoms and how treatment will help. It is given to patients at the end of the first treatment session to read at home. It is useful for the therapist to highlight which sections are particularly relevant for the patient.

Information sheet on PTSD symptoms for family and friends

This information sheet is written for the patient’s significant others and gives information about PTSD symptoms and therapy. It makes suggestions for how they can support the patient during therapy. It is given to the patient to pass on to family and friends if they wish.

Information sheet on complex PTSD symptoms for patients

Normalising symptoms of complex PTSD is part of the assessment and first treatment session. This handout summarises common complex PTSD symptoms and how treatment will help. It is given to patients at the end of the first treatment session to read at home. It is useful for the therapist to highlight which sections are particularly relevant for the patient.

Information sheet: Supporting somebody to practice “Then” versus “Now” for family and friends (trigger discrimination)

Stimulus discrimination (trigger discrimination) is a core technique in CT-PTSD (see training video). After learning the procedure in the therapy session, patients practice it at home and in their everyday life. The information sheet describes how others can assist with practicing  “Then” versus “Now” with memory triggers. It is given to the patient to pass on to family and friends if they wish.

Information sheet: How to support somebody to do a site visit for family and friends

A site visit is a core technique in CT-PTSD (see training video). After doing a virtual site visit via Google Streetview in the therapy session, patients usually visit the site with the therapist or with remote support from the therapist. Friends or family can also help with the site visit. The information sheet describes how others can assist with a site visit. It is given to the patient to pass on to family and friends if they wish them to accompany them.

2. Materials for Therapy Sessions

Therapist notes for first treatment session

The first treatment session after the diagnostic assessment aims to build a good working relationship, discuss the patient’s goals for treatment, normalise symptoms, develop an individual case formulation, demonstrate the effects of thought suppression and give a rationale for the trauma memory work, and start reclaiming/ rebuilding your life assignments. Our trainees have found it useful to use a session notes sheet that cover these areas.

Therapist version of the individual case formulation

Some therapists find it helpful to summarise the individual case formulation in this blank version of the model that they can update as therapy progresses. For an example, see Murray et al. (2020). For examples of sharing maintenance cycles with patients see Wild et al. (2020) and the training video on the first treatment session.

Hot Spot Updating Sheets

Therapists and patients may find it helpful to use one of these sheets (depending on formatting preferences) to generate and summarise updating information for a hot spot. The updates are then linked with the hot spot in imaginal reliving and/or the trauma narrative.

Behavioural Experiment Record Sheet

This sheet is commonly used to help patients and therapists plan behavioural experiments and to record the outcomes of those experiments. Further details on how to use the sheet can be found in the training video Behavioural Experiments.

Therapy Blueprint

This document is commonly used towards the end of therapy to help patients pull together their key learning points from treatment, how they will build on what they have learnt, and plan what to do if any future setbacks arise. A training video on using the therapy blueprint is available тут.
